The Memory of Pain
Rarely was the full meaning of the prints he produced entirely evident in their imagery. Their subjects might be recognizable, clearly drawn, poetically composed and even lovingly portrayed. Yet, beyond the readability of the imagery, underneath the narrative he expressed, beyond symbolism and metaphor, Steeves continuously sought to depict what could not be shown, only sensed. In the truest interpretation of abstraction, Steeves pointed to absence as an intellectual concept.

The Mutability of Knowing
The Mutability of Knowing
The Mutability of Knowing is a suite of 8 etchings derived from Dan Steeves’ life-long relationship with the Bay of Fundy. Created using lithographic tusche washes etched on zinc plates, they explore the expansive flats of the Tantramar marsh and the ever-changing nature of sky and water which characterize the Fundy Basin.

Shared human experience has always been a powerful force in art. It has enabled great artists of the past to reach out over the ages and touch us with their humanity. Theirs was a great purpose in the doing, and those well-loved efforts have common profound meaning for mankind today.
